About Us

National Affordable Housing Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to the creation and preservation of quality affordable housing throughout the Unites States for elderly persons, families, persons with disabilities, and all others in need.

Based in Columbus, Ohio, with offices in cities throughout the country, NAHT is a specialized financial intermediary and consulting firm that provides equity, grants and loans, in addition to development, asset management, and financial advisory services, for the creation and preservation of affordable housing related to the LIHTC Program under Section 42 of the Internal Revenue Code. We are sponsored by and affiliated with five of the nation’s largest, non-profit affordable housing owners and developers, resulting in a robust and collective effort to increase the supply of affordable housing available to the elderly, families, persons with disabilities, and others in need.

History

Founded in 1986 by Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF) and National Church Residences (N^^) with additional financial support from the Ford Foundation, the ARCO Foundation, and the National Council of State Housing Agencies, NAHT was formed as a member-based organization with the sole purpose of providing sponsoring “Members” with the capital and development expertise necessary to support their affordable housing mission. Today, more than two decades later, the organization is five members strong, and includes RHF, N^^, Volunteers of America (VOA), the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society (The Society), and Mercy Housing.

Some key facts related to our total impact, since our inception: NAHT has assisted in the creation and preservation of over 150 rental housing developments, encompassing more than 14,947 affordable housing units in 36 states. These developments alone represent over $1.5 billion of total development costs financed with over $579 million in LIHTC equity secured from over 59 different investors.
